The Medicines Patent Pool is pleased to announce two leading experts in public health have joined its Governance Board: Ms. Malebona Precious Matsoso of South Africa and Dr. Sigrun Møgedal of Norway.
“We welcome the addition of Malebona Precious Matsoso and Sigrun Møgedal to the Governance Board team. Both are distinguished experts in public health and we look forward to benefiting from their considerable experience,” said Charles Clift, chair of the Governance Board of the Medicines Patent Pool. The Governance Board sets policies and strategies for the Pool, oversees its work plan and finances and monitors and evaluates the Pool’s performance.
Malebona Precious Matsoso is the Director General of the National Department of Health of South Africa since June 2010. She was previously the Director of the Public Health, Innovation and Intellectual Property programme at the World Health Organization (WHO), which was responsible for the implementation of the Global Strategy and Plan of Action on Public Health, Innovation and Intellectual Property. She also served as Director of Technical Cooperation for Essential Drugs and Traditional Medicine for the WHO. She served on several advisory panels at home and internationally, including as a member of the National Research Ethics Council in South Africa, the WHO Ethics Review Committee, and the Advisory Panel of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Prior to her international assignments, she was the Registrar of Medicines of the Medicines Control Council in South Africa, served on the Secretariat of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) harmonisation initiative, and held several senior positions in the South African government.
Sigrun Møgedal is a medical doctor, former Ambassador for HIV/AIDS and Global Health Initiatives for Norway, and former Chair of the Board for the Global Health Workforce Alliance at the World Health Organization. She was previously senior advisor to the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD), and senior policy adviser to the Executive Director of UNAIDS. She serves on the boards of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria, the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (GAVI), and UNITAID, and was a founding member of the board at the Global Forum for Health Research. She is currently a special adviser to the Executive Director of UNAIDS and severs as a member of the Independent Monitoring Board for Polio Eradication. She was awarded the status of Knight First Class in the Royal Norwegian Order of Saint Olav and was appointed an officer of the National Order of Merit of France.
Møgedal and Matsoso became official members of the Medicines Patent Pool board on 30 August 2011. Members of the Governance Board act in their personal capacity.
